I’m recent talks with those around me I have come to question what it means to be a leader in today’s society. The fact that this was something so seemingly obvious but yet so hard to pin down left me questioning myself. When someone mentions a leader the first thing that comes to my mind are thoughts of great generals of the past who fought valiantly alongside their men or brave soldiers who put risked their lives for those around them.
These examples, although most likely accurate with regard to leaders, are so only in specific cases. This than begs the question, what leaders exist today? I believe that political leaders are only leaders by name and nothing more, in fact they have proven time and time again that they are not fit to lead the people. So who is left? My mother and father come to mind. They may not be on the field of battle gaining favor and glory, but they are still leaders nonetheless. This is because being a leader comes from the actions and choices you make every day.
Life gives us the free will to do as we please and a leader decides that they will do as much as they can for those around them while asking nothing in return. A leader is someone selfless who leads by example with no intention of leading at all. There is no power play to be made, there are only goals to be met and people to elevate. Discipline, Courage, Compassion, Humility, Integrity, Strength; these are all qualities found in someone who leads. We cannot find such qualities in the celebrities or politicians of today, instead we find them in the hard-working people that strive to build something on this world with the time allotted to them.
With this I ask you to think about the people in your life and whether they would consider you a leader. If not think about the actions you need to take everyday in order to become that leader and how you will get there. However make sure to take your time and be kind to yourself, Rome wasn’t built in a day.
