Well after our visits with my girlfriends this last week we loaded up the car and started our secret trip that I had talked about. Now that it has come and gone I can share where we went without ruining the surprise.... La Grande, OR! We popped on over to my Grandma's house to surprise my Step-mom for her birthday! The best part? That we have been planning this for over a month and she had no idea! Really I had the idea before I left the island, but I had to get my ducks in a row before I could act. This was a very special birthday not just for her, but for us. Because of circumstances out of our control this was the very first birthday that any of us has had while within even a few hundred miles of one another in the ten years that my dad and step mom have been married. I knew I needed to take advantage of that make it the best birthday I could, because I didn't know when I would get another chance.
The girls and I were able to sneak in, but got caught by her when we got out of the car. She was totally caught off guard! Surprise number one- check! Then we informed her that the family BBQ that night was actually a birthday BBQ for her. Surprise number two- check! We joked all evening about how well we threw her off the scent.
The last time I visited I had left our stroller and she couldn't figure out why Dad and I weren't overly concerned about getting it back to me. Now she understood. There were a lot of little ah ha moments like that. The best surprise for me came during gift time.
Let me preface this by saying I am horrible at keeping secrets when it comes to gift giving. Anything else I will take it to the grave, but if there are gifts involved I have the hardest time not forking it over right then and there or blurting it out. I get SO excited. So to calm my overzealousness and to keep me from tell her what I got her I let her in on a secret.... I contacted the rest of my siblings and their wives to put together part of her gift. Her expression when she saw what we had put together for her made all the work worth it!
Yes those would be tears, well almost tears! Even before she opened it she started to tear up! Score one for the kids! The thing she is holding in her hand would be a necklace in the shape of the Celtic eternal knot with all of our names engraved on it along with her birthstone. It goes with the photo album filled with pictures of all of us kids and her grandkids.
If you think the night couldn't get any better, it did! We all had joking talked about the adult cake smashes that are taking the country by storm and that she should do it. I didn't think she was going to do it at first, but......
Dad couldn't resist and had to jump in on all the fun!
All in all I think this will forever be a birthday and weekend to remember!
Don't forget to checkout my girl Damara's week!
